About Ocker & Trapp Library Bindery

Ocker & Trapp Library Bindery was founded in 1964 by bookbinders Ralph Ocker and Herbert Trapp, partners who together put many years of experience into their library bindings and fine hand bindings.

Ralph Ocker began his apprenticeship in 1948 in a commercial bookbindery in Stuttgart , Germany . Upon graduation, he took additional coursework in hand-bookbinding. He then went on to work in various bookbinderies in Germany and the United States , where he has made his home since 1955. He is president and personally handles the sales department.

Herbert Trapp began his career as an apprentice in Germany also. He studied the trade under master hand-bookbinder Al ois Baldes in Wiesbaden . Al so working in various German binderies, he too eventually moved to the United States in 1962. Today, he continues to contribute to the binding process.

The two-partner operation grew to employ over sixty people, and was incorporated in 1978. Ralph and Herbert attribute their company's success to the high quality standards achieved through their total involvement in the binding process. Customer service remains a top priority at Ocker & Trapp, with everyone constantly striving to maintain their high level of excellence.

The separate conservation department was established in 1984 with talented, experienced employees who handle all rare bindings, deacidification, encapsulation, restoration, preservation photocopying and other conservation projects. The department is headed by Millie S uter, Vice President. Millie also oversees quality control and customer service.

Ralph Ocker and Millie Suter are both members of the American Institute for Conservation, the Guild of Book Workers, American Library Association and other professional organizations.

Erin L eon, Office Manager and Angela C alifano are responsible for scheduling, bookkeeping and customer service related issues.

Ocker & Trapp is a proud member of the Library Binding Institute. Al l work done meets or exceeds L.B.I. requirements. Their own delivery vehicles serve customers throughout the Metropolitan Area.
