    LBI Membership Categories at a Glance
    Certified Library Binder | Certified Institutional Member | Certified International Member | Associate Member | Institutional Member

    HBI and the Library Binding Institute (LBI) is an international trade association consisting of two divisions - the hardcover binders division and the certified library binders division (LBI). Membership in the hardcover binders division includes:

    • Access to information and networking with industry experts;
    • A subscription to the quarterly publication, ShelfLife;
    • A subscription to the monthly email newsletter, the Endpaper;
    • Member discounts on conferences, seminars, and publications;
    • A company listing on the website and in the membership directory;
    • Access to members only information on the website which includes back issues of Shelflife, the Endpaper, and articles by Werner Rebsamen, Professor Emeritus RIT and HBI/LBI Technical Consultant; and
    • A membership certificate reflecting your membership in good standing.

    Membership in LBI - Certified Library Binders Division

    As a Certified Library Binder, a library who values long term preservation of the printed word, a member of the printing and publishing industry, or a vendor supplying the printing and binding industry, membership in LBI is a valuable resource.

    LBI Membership Categories

    Certified Library Binder (Contact info@lbibinders.org for more information.)

    A Certified Library Binder shall be any commercial library binder certified under the Library Binding Institute Certification Procedure.

    "Library Binding" shall be defined as: The special binding, rebinding and prebinding of books, periodicals and other printed matter for service in public or private libraries and various kinds of related work according to the Library Binding Institute Standard for Library Binding. It includes the binding or rebinding of books in hard covers other than the original ones and the collation of series of separate periodicals, newspapers, pamphlets, documents, etc. and their binding into permanent covers, rebinding of school textbooks, rebinding of law books, repairing of books for private customers, the restoration and preservation of books and documents and similar work. It does not include edition book binding or the original publishers' binding of periodicals.

    A commercial library binder shall be any individual proprietor, partnership, firm or corporation engaged in the business of library binding. Each separate company shall be eligible for membership.

    To be eligible for Certification as an Institutional Binder, an Institution has to have a Bindery capable of doing Library Binding Institute Standard for Library Binding work, which does a substantial part of the Institution's binding requirements for their own use, as distinguished from those Institutions which use outside commercial binders. Such Institutions will be Certified, after examination of their volumes in the same manner as Commercial Library Binders, and at the discretion of the Executive Director.

    Commercial Library Binders located outside Continental North America are eligible to be Certified after examination of their volumes in the same manner as those binders located in the North American Continent. Once Certified, those binders will have all the prerogatives of Certified Library Binders. Certification includes authorized use of the Library Binding Institute Seal.

    Associate Member (Click here for application.)

    An Associate Member shall be any person or firm engaged in the business of supplying or servicing the library binding industry. An applicant for Associate Membership shall meet the following requirements as a condition of its admission to membership:

    1. It has been in business for a minimum of one (1) year prior to the filing of the application.
    2. It has been sponsored by a Certified Library Binder by letter to the Institute.
    3. It has agreed to abide by the bylaws of the Institute applicable to Associate Members.

    An Institutional member shall be any non-commercial library binder, person, organization or institution whose interests, activities, or occupation are related to library binding.
